Describe the characteristics of a creative individual.

Demography characteristics

Family background and age are the two demographic characteristics of creatively behaving individuals that have been studied most frequently.

Family background

Despite all the contradictions in the findings of scientists regarding family backgrounds of creative individuals, there has been some consensus in certain aspects. Creative people often have described home and school life as experiences in which parents and teachers trusted them to act reasonably and responsibly. There is common evidence among creative people of feelings of either personal of family superiority on a social or an intellectual basis.

Age

Research findings of studies relating age and creativity are also contradictory in nature. In science, creativity occurred between the ages of 30 and 34 for chemists, as it did for mathematicians and physicists. The most productive age of inventors was 30 to 34. Even Edison, who produced over in his 60 year old career nearly 1100 patents, was close to this norm. Between the ages of 33 and 36, Edison took out a total of 312 patents- over one fourth of his career total! But there are of course evidences for creativity at both childhood and old age. Mozart produced minutes at 5, and Paul Morphy was a chess champion at12. Galileo and Milton made notable achievements during their teens. At the other extreme, Cervantes wrote the second part of Don Quixote at 68, and Galileo continued productivity into his 70s.

Personality Characteristics

In contrast to demography and age studies, personality characteristic studies of creative people have produced consistent results. The following have been found to be personality characteristic of creative people:

·         Creative people are non-conformist in nature, that is, they have no concern for the social norms.
·         Creative people prefer complex rather than simple stimulus or problems. They are more comfortable with cognitive complexes.
·         Creative people are flexible in thinking, that is, have high tolerance to ambiguity. They are not disturbed when a problem has many solutions.
·         Creative people are stubborn but humorous in nature.
·         They are willing to take risk.
·         They have a wide range of interest.
·         Creative people are intrinsically motivated for self expression rather than for any reward.
·         They are keenly concerned with quality and novelty.
·         They are open to new experience.
·         They have constructive problem solving approach.
·         They have an inclination to express rather than inhibit their feelings.
·         They enjoy aesthetic impressions and are aesthetically reactive.
·         Creative people have high aspiration level for themselves.
·         They value own independence and autonomy.
